It’s a long and extensive process, and unfortunately, many cases remain unsolved. Samples have to be taken from everything: the ground the crime was committed, all of the things around them, and blood and DNA from the actual victim. No one can touch anything in or around the scene in case of contaminating the evidence. If you watch any modern crime shows today, you can get at least a sense of all of the difficult steps everyone involved in the case has to take in order to solve the crime.
